LUNG CANCER (9/6/05)
You may have seen or heard the latest news that Dana Reeves has been diagnosed with lung cancer and that Peter Jennings has died from lung cancer. What these two people have in common is that they both were diagnosed with lung cancer. The difference is that Peter Jennings was a smoker and Dana Reeves is a non-smoker. Research shows that the deadliest form of cancer doesn’t just strike the pack-a-day crowd; it can even affect those who have never smoked. The cause of lung cancer is no mystery: 90% of all lung cancer is directly related to smoking, either through inhaling a cigarette or by breathing secondhand smoke.
Lung cancer kills more Americans than breast cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer combined.
Whatever your age, sex, race, and family history, the surest way to protect yourself and your family and friends from getting lung cancer is to avoid smoking or quit. If you are a smoker and you want to quit, the Bee Free Program can help.
The Bee Free Program is a free program available to all Greene County residents who want to quit tobacco. It is sponsored by the Greene County Tobacco Control Program, which collaborates on this effort with Partners in Corporate Health, LLC (PCH). Each participant receives an initial packet of information, telephone counseling and a free, 8-week supply of nicotine replacement patches or gum with a physician's consent. ENFORCEMENT CHECKS OF TOBACCO RETAILERS TO BEGIN (5/12/03)
Greene County Drug and Alcohol Program has been selected as the primary
contractor by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to oversee the
Comprehensive Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Program for Greene
County. This is a result of the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA)
of 1998. One component of this grant is to conduct enforcement checks
in accordance with Act 112 of the Pennsylvania Crimes Code. Designated
Greene County police officers will be conducting enforced tobacco
compliance checks of tobacco retailers throughout the county, beginning
in the next couple of weeks. Act
112 stipulates for both the retailer and the clerk to be cited for
non-compliance of the law, which forbids the sale of tobacco to
anyone under the age of 18. Greene County Drug and Alcohol Program's
intention is to assist Greene County tobacco retailers in complying
with Pennsylvania’s tobacco laws, therefore reducing future
generations' opportunity of becoming addicted to nicotine.
The compliance
checks are supported by Greene County Drug & Alcohol Program
and the county commissioners: Dave Coder, Chairman, Farley Toothman
and Scott A. Blair. For more information, call Angie VanDyne at
(724) 852-5276.
